We are pleased to announce the newest map from the Willamette Valley Wineries Association that any wine lover will appreciate.

The geologic complexity of Oregon’s famed Willamette Valley American Viticultural Areas is artfully showcased in this map of soil parent material. Geologists, soil scientists, and graphic specialists collaborated to artfully render the diverse geology and concisely portray fifty million years of evolution.

Soil parent categories are an aggregation and integration of data: Soil Series descriptions from Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and geologic attributes from United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI).

Scientific guidance and reviews were provided by Ray Wells (Portland State University), Scott Burns (Portland State University), David Rand (NRCS), and Andy Gallagher (Red Hills Soils). GIS analysis was provided by Erica McCormick (Cascade GIS); cartography by Rick Zeeb (MagnaTerra Cartographic).

Printed in Oregon on acid free, archival-quality paper.
